The Crafting Process of Handpans The process of making a hang drum big size is intricate. First, two metal pieces are shaped into a shell that is 50 cm in diameter and 0.91 to 0.95 mm thick. After applying a layer of yellow brass, the shell is placed in a high-temperature kiln at 600 degrees Celsius for several hours, then moved to another kiln at 400 degrees for further heating. This temperature variation increases the tensile strength of the steel drum shell by about 10% and enhances its hardness. Next, each sound area is hand-hammered by the maker to adjust the internal resonance of the handpan. This process is repeated many times to fine-tune the pitch. Since all sound areas are on the same piece of metal and close together, striking one can cause others to resonate, making it challenging to achieve precise tuning and a smooth, rounded tone. Additionally, as the steel shell gets thinner with each strike, any miscalculation can affect the pitch of other notes or even ruin the entire handpan. Once the tuning is complete, a plastic seal is applied to the seams to finish the handpan. Thus, the shape, size, smoothness of the metal shell, flexibility, clarity of sound, and pitch accuracy all test the maker's skills, style, patience, intuition, and vision. It requires knowledge from various fields like art, physics, engineering, metallurgy, and sound to create such a handcrafted masterpiece.
